Balboa is a smooth, stylish, classic partner swing dance performed to swing or more modern music.  It originates from the 1920's and 30's, having evolved in the dance halls of the Balboa Peninsula, California, from which it takes its name.  An 8-count dance, the basic steps are danced in close hold, to which we add various break-away moves and variations to make it fun and cool.

The dance's simplicity and economy of movement make it less energetic than other swing dances, and very well suited to fast music.  Many of the original dancers could dance at amazing speeds, however the dance has always been done to music of all tempos, and is great fun at any speed.   It comes into its own on crowded dance floors, and is very handy if you want to hold a conversation whilst dancing!  Elegant, stylish and easy to learn, you can make it as simple or as complicated as you like it will still look good.

Recent years have seen a huge resurgence in popularity of Balboa worldwide.  It is a dance where people build communities and make friends and an international dance with workshops and festivals all over the world.
